Compassion International has extended ministry and sponsorship assistance to populations in need since the 1950s. Today, the organization partners with religious groups in more than 25 countries around the world. For each of these countries, Compassion International dedicates pages on its website, explaining to potential supporters what life is like in these beleaguered regions. One such area is Amhara in northern Ethiopia. The area is afflicted by a serious division of wealth, with most residents either owning successful businesses or living in slums. For this latter demographic, sanitation and resulting infections such as dysentery are a constant concern.
Compassion International is working to aid individuals in Amhara through its Child Development Centers. The centers not only ensure children receive the tutoring they need to excel in their classes at school and address any learning difficulties, but also offer healthy food and medical attention.
Education at the development centers extends beyond basic schooling. Students are taught about proper sanitation and hygiene and receive spiritual instruction.
